about the type of fish you fish for and what you use to catch them! There’re lots of different kinds of fishing here in Costa Rica. Of course there’s deep-sea fishing for the big stuff, like tuna. Some grown ups come here to sport fish, and they are looking to catch rooster fish or swordfish or marlin. I prefer to catch fish you can eat, I guess maybe because I can catch them myself. The really big ones I need help bringing in.
For my 10th birthday I got a Costa Rican fisherman’s net. It’s what all the local people use if they’re not using a line. It’s kind of complicated and hard to throw, but once you get the hang of it, it’s really fun throwing the net. I’ve never really caught anything with it except bait fish, but it's still fun to use it.When I’m fishing in Northern Wisconsin I like using a pole and different lures or worms, but here most people use a hand line instead of a pole for fishing in the river or off the shore. It’s easy and cheap to make a handline—just take some fishing line, tie it to a piece of driftwood, wrap the slack around the wood, then put a hook and your bait on the end. Now you’re ready to fish! |
